Arutmin's environment management practices were developed consistently fit ISO 14001 standards. Arutmin had ISO 14001 certification from PT Sucofindo Indonesia in North Pulau Laut Coal Terminal site operations.

Arutmin retains accountability to Government for environment performance so it obliges contractors to match company policies and standards. Since work by the contractors includes rehabilitation of mining pits, Arutmin imposes stringent standards on contractors.

A framework of best-practice procedures to neutralize possible negative environment impacts exists. However, the environment management approach is "prevention rather than cure". This approach relies on continuous monitoring and auditing. Monitoring takes place daily or weekly depending on the aspect being monitored : micro-climate, air, noise, vibration, geology and soils, hydrology and hydrogeology, water quality, terrestrial and aquatic biota, or land use. Sophisticated practices quarantine or reduce to restorable levels any impact on these aspects of the environment. Extensive activities address the impact on the social environment.

Arutmin conducts regular internal & external audits by recognized environment auditors. Arutmin & contractors jointly conduct annual audits of environment and community programs.
